There are many household items and human foods that are dangerous
to dogs. Signs of poisoning include, but are not limited to:
1. Trembling
2. Drooling
3. Vomiting
4.
Loss of bowel control
5. Lethargy
(a state of seeming extremely lazy; listless; spiritless)
6.
Pale gums
7. Seizures/convulsions
8. Loss of appetite
9. Depression
10.
Abdominal pain
If your dog exhibits any of these signs
it would be very wise to phone your Vet. immediately. He/she will ask you to look for more symptoms while on the phone
and will probably want to see your dog.
This list must be considered incomplete. There are an extreme number
of things that can/will make your dog sick or kill him. Be sure to clean up anything that could even possibly be dangerous
to your dog and NEVER underestimate the resourcefulness of a determined animal, if he wants something!
.
FOODS:
Chocolate;
Tea/coffee beans, grounds or anything with caffeine in it; Alcohol; Grapes; Raisins; Onions;
Broccoli; Garlic (in larger amounts); Castor beans; Apricot seeds; Peach pits; Plumb pits;
Apple seeds; Nutmeg; Sugarless candies; Sugarless Chewing gum; Potato plant greenery, potatoe
"sprouts" and greenish potato pealings; Tree nuts (nuts that grow on trees). Peanuts are the only "common
nut" that is safe for dogs, they are not tree nuts. They grow under ground.) Some baked goods (beware
of anything that is made with some sort of artificial sweeteners).
.
PLANTS:
Poinsettia
(mild poison); Tulips; Daffodils; Narcissus; Azaleas; Rhododrendrons; Aloe vera;
Asparagus fern; Cactus; tobacco plant; red peppers; petunias; eggplant. Any plant in the nightshade
family, this includes, but not limited to, the very commonly grown tomato plant (greenery); potato plant (greenery), and greenish
color/tint on potato skins. The potato plant is sometimes used as a pretty, leafy coffee table plant and, should
you find ANY GREEN on the skin of the potato you may be fixing for dinner, that is very toxic to ANY animal, including humans!
At least peal it deep enough to remove All traces of green. I'm fighting this problem with my local grocery store
because every now and then, they are selling green tinted potatoes; Dumbcane; Elephant's ear; Ficus;
Foxglove; Holly; Honeysuckle; Horse chestnut; Ivy; Japanese yew; Jasmine; Lilies;
Lily of the Valley; Marijuana; Mistletoe; Morning glory flowers; Mums; Oak; Oleander;
Philodendron; Poppies; Rhubarb; Skunk cabbage; Tobacco; Tulip bulbs; Virginia creeper;
Many wild mushrooms. I know I didn't list all of them, but these are the most prevalent.
.
HUMAN
MEDICINES (Even over the counter meds)
Ibuprofen/Advil; Naproxen; Acetaminophen/Tylenol; Acetylsalicylic
acid (ASA)/Aspirin; Human antidepressants; Human multivitamins; Many other supplements; Many human antibiotics;
most all prescription drugs. Most antihistamines. The ONLYone that
can be used for dogs is "Benadryl" which is strictly the antihistamine "Diphenhydramine Hydrocloride".
It can be of a generic brand but, IT CAN HAVE ONLY THIS, ONE INGREDIENT
IN IT. No combined ingredients! This and ONLY this can be given to dogs.
Other allergy medications very likely will cause your dogs heart to speed up so fast he will more than likely DIE!
ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR VET. FOR DOSAGE. Most human medications will harm/kill your
dog, so DON'T! The best and safest way is to NEVER give any medication to your dog without
checking with your Vet. FIRST!
.
THINGS AROUND THE HOUSE:
AUTOMOTIVE
ANTIFREEZE (ethylene glycol/EG), even a small amount, is a sure fire way to kill your dog. This poisoning
must be treated VERY quickly if the dog is to survive. (also see "Swiffer WetJet" on our page titled "Things
that will kill your dog"). Because this is such a quick and sure killer I am putting the symptoms here.
This stuff destroys the kidneys very quickly.
Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning:
Sweet breath (antifreeze is very sweet tasting and smelling); nausea/vomiting; acting drunk or uncoordinated;
within an hour of ingestion, depression, drooling and an inability to stand.
If you even think there is a possibility of this poisoning, don't delay RUSH TO
YOUR VET. AND HAVE A URINE TEST PREFORMED. THE DOG HAS A VERY SHORT TIME TO LIVE WITHOUT PROPER
TREATMENT! HOURS!
.
Any
household cleaners; Bleach; Toilet bowl cleaners; Drain openers (very strong acid); Soap; Insecticides
(including flea killing products); Mothballs; Polishes; Rodent poisons; Sunscreen; Fireworks;
Citronella; Fertilizers; Herbicides; Batteries; Gasoline; Motor oil; Transmission fluid
and just any other chemical compounds.
You may want to print off this listing so you have it available for quick
reference. It could save your dog's OR CHILD'S life!
