Below, you will find a list of the grooming tools needed to preform a proper grooming on many types of dogs, including our beloved Westies.

Laube Mini Micro two speed clippers with lights

This is the exact same professional unit Joyce uses in our Grooming Shop. ---- ITEM #1

Andis 2 speed clipper that would be fine for the

average home groominger. This is a pro. unit but, cost less then the Laube. Has no lite. Item #1A

Here are the two main clipper blades you

will need for general grooming. --- ITEM #2

Oster Finisher

A must for all dogs. ---- ITEM #3

Oster Cool Lube --- Clipper lube --- A MUST!

Clipper blades must be cleaned and lubed with each use. ---- ITEM #4

Two sizes of GOOD QUALITY hair shears and one pair

of small hi-quality noes hair shears. ITEM #5

When it comes to scissors, purchase quality shears. Hair is difficult to cut and you MUST have very good quality steel and sharpness. The 8' shears shown above have an adjustable tension knob on the side (which is a very good idea), are of high quality steel, razor sharp and cost around $55.00. The smaller shears are 4 1/2" long and are of similar quality(without the tension knob). They will cost around $50.00. The smallest are actually nose hair scissors made by La Cross. These have rounded tips for safety, can be obtained at Walmart in the section where you find fingernail files, cost around $7.50. Don't purchase "Baby Finger nail scissors". They are not of the quality these are. You'll learn how and where to use these in our videos.

The above dryer is the one in our grooming shop and has been used commercially/daily for the past 3 1/2 years without any problem what-so-ever. It has dryed well over 4000 dogs, approx. 1300 hours of use.

You'll need a good dryer like the one above to do a good job. You may think of using a human hair dryer but, using one of those will take about four times as long to complete the drying and it also has heating elements that can cause the heat to become too hot and damage the hair and/or burn your dog's skin. Once you have used one of these dryers, you'll wonder why you waited so long to purchase it! The difference between these dryers and a human hair dryer is like night is to day!

This is the best type brush for all dogs. ---- ITEM #7

hand stripping. Get them at a stationary store.

These are actually for sorting papers. They come

in many sizes. Turn inside-out to use to strip. Purchase at stationary store.

This is a MUST! It is a great ear cleaner. We

have used it daily in our shop for yrs.. Our videos will show how to use it. -- ITEM #10

Standard Q-Tips

Used VERY CAREFULLY to clean the ears.

Ear powder. Applying a SMALL amount of this

into the UPPER ear area aids in hair removal. --- ITEM #11

This dryer only emits heat created by the motor, which is 12-15 degrees warmer then th ambient air temp. so there's no worry about burning the hair nor skin. Again this is a professional piece of equipment, made to be used extensively. It should last an individual possibly, ten to 15 years or more.

Quality, professional tools are not cheap. We strive to offer the best quality equipment for the lowest possible price. Many times, even including shipping charges, we can supply your needs at less cost than you may find anywhere. Some cheap tools look like what we offer but, if there not the exact same brand and size, chances are they won't work as well. We know! BEEN THERE---DONE THAT, over the years!!!

This is an inexpensive sprayer that we use

for bathing all size dogs. Look for it at Home Dopot.

6 inch, surgical "mosquito" hemostat. Used to

remove hair, deep in the ear canal. A MUST! --- ITEM #12

This tool is called a "Furminator". One

of the tools used to remove excess dead hair. --- ITEM #13

This is called a "stipiing knief. Used

with or instead of finger stripping. ---- ITEM #14

This tool is called a "Mars King Stripper". The

best tool to remove excess dead hair. The "Mars" brand is the only good one out there. ITEM # 15

Others make a tool that looks like this but, this one is the only one that works well.

Standard nail clippers. Use CARFULLY to remove

EXCESS toe nail (if need) prior to grinding. ---ITEM #16

36" Grooming Arm. A must for grooming, control-

ling your pet while you work. It clamps onto the edge of any table up to 1 3/4" thick. #17

This is a Dremel "#100" rotary tool. This is

the smallest and best one to purchase. Can be obtained at WalMart.

This is the stone you'll need to do nails. It

sometimes comes with the #100 tool. It is Dremel part # 932. NOTE THE CUPPED END.

A NOTE TO SAVE YOU FROM PURCHASING A PIECE OF TRASH!!!

There has been an item on the market for quite a while, called the "PediPaws" dog toenail grinder. This unit is totally worthless. We have known several people who have spent $20.00(?) on one and ended up throwing it into the trash. We tried one that was brought to us and it is worthless. Just a gimmick to get you money! Buy a Dremel and the proper stone.

Yes, we use all of the items pictured above and more in our grooming shop and yes, purchasing all these at once would be costly.

To do either a "clip" grooming or a "hand stripped" grooming, you will at least need the following items. These can be acquired over a period of time but, you WILL need them.

Laube Clipper; 3- Oster clipper blades; Oster Finisher clipper; Oster Cool Lube, Scissors; Universal brush; Medium/Fine steel comb (the silver one in the photos); Ear cleaner; Q-Tips; Ear powder; Mosquito hemostat; Toe nail tools.

If you intend to Hand Strip, you will also need the Finger Tips; King Stripper;6" Mediun & Wide tooth comb and you may want a Furminator.

If you take care of your tools properly, all of the listed items should last years and years. They are professional grade tools that are built to be used daily in grooming shops. Clean your clipper blades with Oster Cool lube buy running the clipper and spraying the oil downward and through the sides of the blade flooding out the hair. NEVER FLOOD OIL UP TOWARD THE MOTOR HOUSING. NEVER cut dirty hair with clippers or scissors. The clipper blades should only need sharpening after 50-75 clippings. That could be something like every 4 years or so for one dog. The clipper, itself, should last you around 8-10 years (for one dog).
